So... Why Hip-Hop?

Posted by war-spawn - October 20th, 2007

I have been asked this question many times while in my "not-sampling-anymore" phase, and people who I've shown in real life my works are the sorta people who don't even listen to anything close to hip-hop. But when they heard a couple of my latest tracks, they really were into the music like if it was their favorite song. Then, they asked me, 'Why rap? You'll do just as good making Rock. Or possibly even techno. Something that people would really like."

Well, my answer is pretty complex, but is a valid reason in which I do create Hip-Hop music. A main influence was because of my family, since my family line is full of musicians and artists. And because I was growing, and still am in, a city that is increasingly becoming more and more dangerous, is the reason that I adapted to Hip-Hop. But while growing, I've have viewed a more logical reason to making only hip-hop. To me, hip-hop is the most diverse genre out there... period. You can mix it with anything, and it'll blend well. That is because hip-hop is a little of everything. And because of the diversity, I am allowed to focus on more points of music while it still being hip-hop.

Another reason I chose hip-hop as my dominant genre is because of lyricism. Any one can write lyrics to a rock song, love song, or whatever. Though you still have to preform singing, which gives more emotion, I give credit for that. But to come out with an epic verse, line for line, just having an extraordinary amount of wit behind your words, is what makes rapping my thing. And to tell you the truth, I don't even consider myself a rapper, but a poet. My verses can hold emotions in them that not a lot of other people can bring out while writing verses. Lyrically, I can tell you with no ego that I am equivalent to most elevated thinkers. It's just the whole scheme of the flow in my words, the tone of my voice, and how well I can put a track together that keeps me from leaving hip-hop. You can do so many things lyrically, and yet there is always room for improvement.

Remember people... "Music is only as good as its beholder..."

amen to dat brutha.

Hip hop has a lot of influence. It created a few new genres. Ghetto-Tech,Trip-Hop,Grime,Etc. And Yeah my cuzzin likes to be called a poet rather than rapper. Understandable. But Poet/Lyricist I think they're one in the same.

yo i respect, love, and could live by every word you typed here
any rapper that don't think of them self as a poet
is half the time not even worth listening to

To me emotion is unexplaniable, all we can do is tell the story and hope people understand what weve been through.
